Washington University Experience | NEOPLASMS - CRANIAL AND PARASPINAL NERVEs | Schwannoma | 16B2 Schwannoma (Case 16) H&E 1
16B2-4 Sections show an encapsulated spindle cell neoplasm with relatively dense hypercellular areas (Antoni A) alternating with loosely packed areas (Antoni B). The neoplastic cells have ovoid elongated nuclei with hyperchromatic chromatin with a stippled appearance, eosinophilic cytoplasm and poorly defined cell-cell borders. There are rare cells with enlarged, atypical appearing nuclei, so-called 'ancient change.' Occasional mitotic figures are present. Within the lesion are dilated vessels with round profiles. One curious feature of this tumor is the prominent formation of whorls, mimicking meningioma. In some areas such structures resemble pseudo-Meissner corpuscles, more common in neurofibromas but not limited to them. (H&E)
