Washington University Experience | NEOPLASMS - CRANIAL AND PARASPINAL NERVEs | Schwannoma | 18B3 Schwannoma (Case 18) Area A H&E 1.jpg
The tumor cells are round to spindled in appearance. The rounded cells are small with some cytoplasmic clearing and have nuclei that are round, regular and hyperchromatic with occasional prominent nucleoli. The spindled cells have eosinophilic cytoplasm but do not have distinct cell-cell borders. The spindle cell tumor nuclei are elongated with rounded edges, have some irregularity, and have hyperchromatic chromatin with occasional prominent nucleoli. Focally, the spindled tumor nuclei line up to form structures reminiscent of Verocay bodies, but compelling Verocay bodies are not identified resembling cellular schwannoma. Some of the tumor cells have very atypical nuclei that appear quite large, are irregular, and have hyperchromatic chromatin with some prominent nucleoli. Mitotic figures are not readily identified.
