5B1 Schwannoma (Case 5) H&E whole mount 1
5B1,2 Sections of a peripheral nerve with an attached spindle cell neoplasm that is arranged predominantly in a fascicular pattern and in some places shows streaming (palisading) around acellular, eosinophilic areas (Verocay bodies). The tumor cells have wavy elongated vesicular nuclei typical of Schwann cells and exhibit minimal pleomorphism, although in some areas degenerative atypia is noted. Mitoses are rare and scattered. Intervening hypocellular areas rich in myxoid matrix along with small foci of chronic inflammatory cell infiltrate and hemosiderin laden histiocytes.
