Case 18 History ---- The patient was an 11 year old boy with a tumor involving the posterior elements of the spine at the level of L5 that erodes bone and expands into the adjacent soft tissue. Operative procedure: L4-5/S1 fusion with resection of bony tumor. ---- 18A An intraoperative smear shows the cells have a modest amount of eosinophilic, foamy cytoplasm, convoluted, grooved nuclear contours, open chromatin, and a moderately prominent nucleolus.
