3B1,2 Microscopic examination of all the grossly observed lesions as well as sections of the spinal cord shows a large B-cell lymphoma which has extensive regions of necrosis. Although multiple microglial nodules are seen in sections from the cerebral hemispheres, multinucleated giant cells (whose presence is required for a diagnosis of HIV encephalitis) are not seen. There is no evidence of any other infectious or neoplastic process.
