Washington University Experience | NEOPLASMS (MENINGIOMA) | Anaplastic | 11B1 Meningioma, anaplastic (Case 11) H&E 2
11B1-5 The neoplasm has a heterogeneous appearance with large areas of hyalinization and prominent chronic inflammatory cell infiltrate. The cellularity is variable from moderate to hypercellular areas and the tumor is mostly arranged in a sheeted to lobulated/nodular pattern with the neoplastic cells having a meningothelial to sarcomatous appearance. Small cell, chordoid areas, multifocal necrosis, prominence of nucleoli and frequent mitoses (29/10HPF) are noted. Based on the WHO criteria of mitotic count of >20/10HPF, in addition to sarcomatous foci, this meningioma qualifies for a designation of an anaplastic meningioma.
