5B2 Meningioma, angiomatous and microcystic (Case 5) H&E 5
5B2-7 H&E stained sections of the resected material show fragments of a dura-associated neoplasm. Much of the tumor tissue is formed by rather pleomorphic epithelioid cells with variably moderate to abundant pale eosinophilic or vacuolated cytoplasm, distinct cell borders, and nuclei that range from small and oval to very large and hyperchromatic (consistent with 'degenerative atypia'). Interspersed are numerous hyalinized thick-walled blood vessels of small to large caliber, and microcysts often filled with flocculent eosinophilic material. There is no evidence of so-called 'spontaneous' necrosis; nor is there evidence of hypercellularity, robust macronucleoli (outside of cells with 'degenerative atypia'), 'sheeted' architecture, or 'small cell change.' Mitotic figures are rare. No associated brain tissue is identified to allow evaluation for brain invasion.
