13A1 Meningioma, chordoid (Case 13) H&E 2
Case 13 History ---- The patient was a 62 year old woman with Meniere's disease and two lesions suspicious for meningioma. Operative procedure: Craniotomy and tumor excision. ---- 13A1,2 Sections show spindled cells arranged in ribbons within a myxoid background. Some areas within the material have a more classical meningioma appearance with whorled collections of spindle-shaped cells and a rare psammoma body. This histology is characteristic of a chordoid meningioma. Immunohistochemistry for EMA and progesterone receptor highlight the tumor cells. Immunohistochemistry for Ki-67 shows few proliferating cells. Chordoid meningiomas represent a relatively aggressive histologic subtype and merit a WHO grade 2 designation.
