Washington University Experience | NEOPLASMS (MENINGIOMA) | Gross Pathology | 35A1 Meningioma (Case 35)
Case 35 History ---- This 77 year old woman had arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease with several recent and remote myocardial and also episodes of confusion with periods of lucidity proven at autopsy to represent Alzheimer disease. ---- 35A1,2 A large (3cm) clinically incidental meningioma was noted to be attached to the tuberculum sella. The meningioma has invaded bone and eroded the adjacent cortex; however, a thin rim of cortex appears to be continuous underneath the tumor. Microscopic examination identifies a layer of leptomeninges between the tumor and the cortex which showed tremendous thinning with loss of neuron layering and loss of neurons, increase in glial elements and also evidence of calcification scattered in perivascular and perineuronal location. The adjacent white matter also showed focal areas of tissue loss with gliosis.
