Case 5 History ---- This 65 year old female had a long history of joint disease and suffered a subtrochanteric fracture of the left femur. She developed respiratory distress, became disoriented and expired. ---- At autopsy the unfixed brain weighed 1170g and had severe cerebral atherosclerosis. There was a 1 cm mass lying among the cauda equine roots with the histologic appearance of a meningioma WHO Grade I. There were multiple cutaneous neurofibromas and a grossly (but not microscopically described) 8th cranial nerve tumor.
---- 5A This cauda equina mass produced no symptoms in this patient who may have had undiagnosed NF2.
