19 Rhabdoid meningioma (Case 19) H&E 20X
Case 19 History ---- The patient was a 68 year old woman with a recurrent meningioma, prior resection in 1996 with a diagnosis of atypical meningioma. ---- 19A Sections from the "frontal lesion" show a meningioma composed predominantly of cells with oval nuclei with a moderate amount of eosinophilic cytoplasm and indistinct cell borders. Occasional cells display more enlarged, irregular-shaped hyperchromatic nuclei, some with prominent nucleoli. There is some degree of sheeting architecture present as well. Occasional foci of small cell change as evidenced by cells with minimal cytoplasm and small round hyperchromatic nuclei are present. A few small areas contain cells with eccentrically-placed nuclei and abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm, sometimes with filamentous-like inclusions, imparting a rhabdoid morphology. Foreign embolization material is detected in scattered intratumoral blood vessels. Overall, the current lesion represents an atypical meningioma, WHO grade 2 with focal rhabdoid features. This patient's two prior resection specimens (in 1994 and 1996) were reviewed. The current lesion does not appear to have changed appreciably from these prior specimens. A diagnosis of atypical meningioma with focal rhabdoid features (WHO Grade 2) was made.
