Washington University Experience | NEOPLASMS (MESENCHYMAL, NON-MENINGOTHELIAL) | Chordoma | 9B Chordoma (Case 9) H&E 4
Sections show fragments of bone, dense fibrous tissue, and prominent myxoid material. Within this tissue are neoplastic appearing cells arranged in short cords, small nests, and as scattered individual cells. The cells have round nuclei with mildly irregular nuclear contours and hyperchromatic to glassy chromatin. They have pink to deeply eosinophilic cytoplasm that contains single and multiple prominent variably-sized vacuoles, so-called physaliphorous cytoplasm. Mitotic figures are not observed.
