Washington University Experience | NEOPLASMS (MESENCHYMAL, NON-MENINGOTHELIAL) | Hemangioblastoma - Von Hippel Lindau | 8A0 Case 8 History
Case 8 History ---- The patient was a 32 year old right handed male with Von Hippel-Lindau syndrome of multiple hemangioblastomas. At the age of 18 he had a retinal hemangioblastoma in his right eye with intraocular hemorrhage which led to enucleation. At 22 he underwent a posterior fossa resection for a large cerebellar hemangioblastoma. When he was 21 a T-7 cord lesion, a dorsal T-1 lesion as well as an L-5 cauda equina lesion were resected as they became symptomatic. Another cerebellar tumor was resected at the age of 29. Multiple surgeries followed with development of paraplegia. The patient underwent experimental I131 labeled monoclonal antibody therapy without improvement. He developed a 1.5 cm lesion in the suprasellar cistern. The patient's final hospital course was complicated by urinary retention along with difficulty with catheterization. This necessitated a banana suprapubic tube catheter to be placed. The next day the patient went into cardiorespiratory arrest. Cardiopulmonary resuscitative efforts were unsuccessful.
