7A1 ALS & FTLD (Case 7) _1
Case 7 History ---- The patient was a 64-year-old female with past medical history of ALS on Radicava (Edaravone) infusions. Her first known symptoms began in June 2017 with slowing of speech and left-hand clumsiness. She was diagnosed with ALS in February 2018, with predominately bulbar symptoms. Her symptoms worsened over the next few months with development of weakness in her hands and legs. She was also on enteral nutrition support through a percutaneous gastrostomy tube and required non-invasive ventilation with average volume assured pressure support (AVAPS). She presented to an OSH with respiratory distress where she passed away due to respiratory failure. ---- 7A1,2 At autopsy, the weight of the unfixed brain was 1210g. ---- There was a modest degree of general cortical atrophy involving frontal, temporal and precentral portions of the frontal motor cortex; however, coronal sections only showed mild-to-moderate dilatation and blunting of the temporal and frontal horns.
