1C1-3 The end stage of neurons with NFT is loss of the involved neuron. NFT are often resistant to degradation and persist as “ghost tangles” in the extracellular space. They typically are more eosinophilic (arrowheads,1C1) than intact NFT-containing neurons and lose normal neuronal substructure such as the nucleus. (H&E)
