Final Neuropathologic Diagnoses: Corticobasal degeneration; Alzheimer disease neuropathologic change (Low –NIA-AA Criteria A1,B1,C0; see comment) ---- Comment: There is neuropathologic evidence of corticobasal degeneration (CBD) including: neuronal loss, gliosis, swollen achromatic neurons or ballooned neurons, and tau-positive neuronal and glial cytoplasmic inclusions in cortical and subcortical nuclei. The tauopathy also includes astrocytic inclusions which form clusters called ‘astrocytic plaques’ and threads which are distinct from those seen in AD. There is additional evidence of Alzheimer disease neuropathologic change (ADNC), but these changes are very modest. In the more recent National Institute on Aging-Alzheimer's Association (NIA-AA) criteria, this case has Alzheimer disease neuropathologic change (ADNC) (Low – ABC score: A1,B1,C0; where A = beta-amyloid stage (range: 0-3); B = neurofibrillary tangle stage (range: 0-3); and C = neuritic plaque stage 3 (range: 0-3).
