Sections of the midbrain substantia nigra show patchy neuron loss, astrocytosis and extraneural pigment, both free in the neuropil and in macrophages. There are scattered neurons whose central perikaryal cytoplasm is mildly basophilic and displaces pigment, likely representing tangles. Lewy bodies are not seen. (H&E)
