There are significant amyloid-beta plaques, neuritic plaques, neurofibrillary tangles and neuropil threads are present throughout the hippocampus and entorhinal cortex and are accompanied by amyloid angiopathy. ---- Not shown: Tau immunoreactive NFTs are abundant, and neuropil threads are present at high density with ARTAG in the amygdala and surrounding cortex. Large ballooned neurons are not seen. The intensity of pTau IHC may reflect staining of argyrophilic grain disease, although a Bielschowsky silver stain fails to establish this diagnosis. Neuritic plaques are seen with tau IHC. Beta amyloid IHC does not demonstrate significant numbers of senile plaques which contrasts with the demonstration of neuritic plaques and likely reflects the differences in IHC sensitivities of tau and BAP IHC. No alpha-synuclein inclusions are present. In contrast, significant numbers of TDP43 inclusions are present in the amygdala.
