A whole mount of the basal ganglia (arrowhead marks the caudate nucleus) shows significant loss of substance and change in its normally convex contours. Sections from the basal ganglia show neuronal loss, gliosis, extravasated lipofuscin pigments, and vacuolated changes within the caudate nucleus and putamen. (H&E)
