Multiple sections of the basal ganglia show extensive gliosis with proliferating astrocytes and closely spaced and thinned white matter tracks (pencil fibers of Wilson), indicative of striatal neuronal dropout and partial collapse. The extent of gliosis is greater in the lateral putamen than in the medial putamen or the caudate. (H&E)
