Polyglutamine (1C2) immunohistochemistry reveals frequent neuronal intranuclear inclusions and sparse dystrophic neurites. 1C2-reactivity is also seen in granules within the cytoplasm of some neurons. ---- Not shown: 1C2-positive neuronal inclusions are seen in the substantia nigra, periaqueductal gray and red nucleus. There is very modest neuronal loss in the pontine nuclei. Isolated 1C2-positive inclusions are seen in the tegmentum and pontine nuclei. No beta-amyloid plaques and no argyrophilic neuritic plaques or neurofibrillary tangles are present. No tau or alpha-synuclein pathology is present.
