2A3,4 Coronal sections through all the cerebral hemispheres show marked attenuation of white matter, including digitate, subcortical, centrum semiovale (particularly in occipital lobe), and corpus callosum especially splenium. The residual white matter is discolored. The cortical mantle looks minimally atrophic but is otherwise normal. The basal ganglia lack the normal appearance of the internal capsule and the thalamus is significantly atrophic.
