Microscopic Description (not shown):Sections of the substantia nigra show extensive loss of neurons with associated gliosis and free pigment in the neuropil with numerous Lewy bodies. Lewy bodies are also present in the loci cerulei. Scattered Lewy bodies are identified in the cortical grey matter. The cortical grey matter also shows numerous neuritic plaques with scattered non-neuritic plaques and occasional neurofibrillary tangles on Bielschowsky silver stains. Both hippocampi show large numbers of neurofibrillary tangles. ---- Final Neuropathologic Diagnoses: Idiopathic Parkinson's disease with cortical Lewy bodies; Alzheimer's disease
