Case 2 History ---- The decedent was an 89 year old woman with a past medical history of hypertension requiring dual antihypertensives. Per the patient's family, she had at least a 10-year history of Alzheimer’s-type dementia, considered to be end-stage at the time of expiration. In December 2015, her family noticed that she was having difficulty eating and began losing weight. Beginning in January 2016, the decedent was bedridden and only able to transfer to a chair. In the weeks leading up to expiration, her family did not report any illnesses. She recently had a flu shot. In March 2016, the decedent’s family noted difficulty breathing that was of sudden onset and called for Emergency Medical Services. Upon arrival, the decedent was in pulseless electrical activity. She received epinephrine and cardiopulmonary resuscitation for at least 22 minutes. Upon arrival to the emergency room, a pulse could not be re-established.
