The microscopic appearance of the cerebellum is significant for patchy loss of Purkinje cells, severe in some areas, and large numbers of axonal spheroids (arrows) involving residual Purkinje cell axons in the granular layer. The cerebellar dentate nucleus shows relatively well preserved neuron numbers but marked astrocytosis which also involves the adjacent cerebellar white matter. (H&E)
