Coronal sections show basal ganglia with atrophy and light brown discoloration of the putamen bilaterally and normal lateral ventricles. The deep grey structures show marked neuronal loss and astrocytosis of the putamen, significantly more than the lesser involvement, if any, of the caudate and globus pallidus.
