The impressive gross change in the basis pontis is matched y the nearly complete loss of its neuronal complement, accompanying astrocytosis, and loss of transversely oriented axons and myelin. Much of the residual mass of the basis is made up of descending corticospinal and corticobulbar tracts which are well preserved. The superior cerebellar peduncle is maintained while the middle cerebellar peduncle is devastated. (H&E)
