2F2-4 Sections of the midbrain substantia nigra show loss of zona reticularis neurons and pigmented neurons of the zona compacta, with astrocytosis, granular axonal spheroids and extraneural pigment, both free in the neuropil and in macrophages. In some areas the pathologic process appears burned out. (H&E)
