Axonal spheroids are frequently seen, especially with a Bodian silver stain. ---- The nucleus that has been affected mainly in this patient is the globus pallidus and the pathological process is that of a primary degenerative one rather than ischemic, toxic or other. The macroscopic and microscopic findings in the globus pallidus are similar to the ones that have been described in Hallervorden-Spatz disease. However, the age of the patient, the clinical symptomatology and the absence of any other significant pathology in other related sites of the CNS are atypical.
