A Gallyas stained preparation demonstrates axonal spheroids and neuronal and glial inclusions. ---- Other stains (not shown): Bielschowsky stains show only mild to moderate numbers of diffuse plaques in their areas of greatest density. Sections of the hippocampus showed granulovacuolar degeneration with some neurofibrillary tangles. No Lewy bodies were identified in either the substantia nigra or the locus ceruleus. The cause of the substantially blunted and dilated lateral ventricles is unclear.
