There is particularly severe cortical atrophy of the temporal lobes and the cortex of the parahippocampal gyri are markedly thin (<2 mm greatest diameter) . There is yellow discoloration of the temporal white matter and the cortex. ---- Not shown: Sections of the brainstem show a normally shaped aqueduct and 4th ventricle, lined by smooth, shiny ependyma. The substantia nigra and locus ceruleus are normally pigmented. The internal landmarks of the brainstem are apparent. Radial sections of the cerebellum reveal the usual foliar pattern, and unremarkable white matter and dentate nucleus. The spinal cord is available from the cervical to the sacral level. It is normal externally and on multiple transverse sections.
