In the pyramidal layer of the hippocampus there are numerous Pick bodies.(Bodian) ---- Not shown: In regions of mesial temporal lobe, insular cortex, hippocampus, amygdala, and cingulate gyrus where atrophy is most severe, swollen ballooned “chromatolytic” neurons ("Pick cells") are numerous. The Bielschowsky stains demonstrate rare diffuse plaques, though conspicuously absent are neocortical tangles and neuritic plaques. There are no cortical Lewy bodies found on H&E stains.
