Coronal sections of the cerebral hemispheres show marked ventricular blunting and dilatation involving the frontal and temporal lobes predominantly with lesser degrees of parietal and occipital involvement. The cortical ribbon is thinned in the frontal and temporal lobes compared to other cortices. The hippocampus is markedly diminished in size. ---- Not shown: Sections of the brainstem and cerebellum are unremarkable with only slight pallor of the substantia nigra and locus ceruleus.
