13B1 PSP (Case 13) N6 SN H&E 2.jpg
Sections of the midbrain show mild to moderate loss of pigmented dopaminergic neurons from the substantia nigra, and associated pigment incontinence. PHF-1 IHC (not shown) highlights regionally variable sparse, moderate, or frequent neurofibrillary tangles throughout the midbrain, as well as variably numerous ‘tufted’ astrocytes (morphologically classic examples in the red nucleus and superior colliculus), neuropil threads, and ‘coiled bodies’ (inclusions within oligodendrocytes).
