At autopsy the weight of the unfixed brain is 1000g. Definitive cortical atrophy was not appreciated as the gyri appear full and the sulci appropriately spaced. Coronal sections of the cerebral hemispheres reveal a normal cortical ribbon, underlying white matter, and thalamus. There was mild ventricular dilatation and blunting of the angles. In the basal ganglia, the globus pallidus is mildly to moderately atrophic relative to the putamen and caudate nuclei.
