Higher magnification of subthalamic neurons containing globus tangles. (Bielschowsky) ---- Not shown: Sections of numerous brain regions show neuronal loss, astrocytosis and the presence of globose neurofibrillary tangles. Sites included the medial thalamus, the globus pallidus, substantia nigra, red nucleus, dorsal pons and the periaqueductal. region in the midbrain including the extraocular motor nuclei. The aqueduct also appeared to be enlarged. Mild gliosis and a few neurofibrillary tangles and senile plaques are present in the frontal cortex and hippocampus. ---- Final Neuropathologic Diagnosis: Progressive supranuclear palsy.
