The inferior olivary nucleus (ION) has many swollen and vacuolated neurons with bizarre hypertrophic astrocytes consistent with inferior olivary hypertrophy, a transneuronal effect. There was also severe pathology in the red nucleus and the dentate nucleus which are connected to ION by the Guillain Mollaret triangle.
