The locus coeruleus shows moderate neuronal loss and several neurofibrillary tangles. (H&E) ---- Not shown: Several tau-immunoreactive pre-tangles, neurofibrillary tangles and only rare glial inclusions (tufted astrocytes) are present in the tegmentum and basis pontis. Neuronal and glial tau pathology is also seen in the pontine nuclei. No Lewy bodies, TDP-43 immunoreactive NCIs, diffuse beta-amyloid plaques or amyloid angiopathy are seen.
