Washington University Experience | NEURODEGENERATION | Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) | 5C1 PSP (Case 5) Cortex PHF1 Tufted & Coiled Body 1
5C1-3 The neocortices show modest to moderate neuronal loss, focal microvacuolation and gliosis. Sparse diffuse beta-amyloid plaques but no neuritic plaques and only few neurofibrillary tangles are present. Tau immunohistochemistry reveals scattered neurofibrillary tangles and diffusely tau-positive neurons (pre-tangle stage), rare coiled bodies (tau inclusions within oligodendrocytes), neuropil threads at low density in the cortical ribbon, and abundant tau-positive 'tufted' astrocytes in the cortex and underlying white matter. No alpha-synuclein-positive inclusions (Lewy bodies) are present. and there are no TDP-43-immunoreactive neuronal cytoplasmic inclusions (NCIs) in the frontal lobe.
