2A1 Child Sural (Case 2) 9wk old Plastic 40X 1
Case 2 History (9wk effective age) ---- The patient was a nine-week-old female with weakness and multiple cardiovascular congenital malformations, status post cardiothoracic surgery. Rule out critical illness myopathy or congenital myopathy. Operative procedure: Muscle and tibial nerve biopsy. ---- 2A1-4 One micron-thick, toluidine blue stained sections of the plastic embedded biopsy material show fascicles (only one is shown) with hypomyelinated axons, developing bimodal distribution of small and large myelinated axons and patchy large zones without myelinated axons. The nerve was thought to represent a developing otherwise normal nerve consistent with the patient's age. There was no evidence of active axonal degeneration. (Toluidine blue-stained one-micron thick plastic-embedded section)
