5A1 Sciatic nerve (Case 5) 21 wk fetus sciatic H&E 2
Case 5 History (Bilbao & Schmidt (2015) 9wk effective age) Peripheral sciatic nerve from a 33-week preterm infant surviving 16 additional weeks (thus, effectively a 9-week-old) shows a monomorphic population of myelinated axons at higher density, and including axons with thinned myelin for axon caliber. ---- 5A1-3 This is an unusual nerve in which there is fascicle-to-fascicle variability in the populations of myelinated axons. (Toluidine blue-stained one-micron thick plastic-embedded section)
