Higher magnification shows a dominance of large myelinated axons in comparison to small myelinated (in sural nerve small myelinated fibers predominate over large myelinated axons by several fold). The large myelinated axons appear well preserved. In addition, even at this magnification there appear to be numerous “regenerative clusters”. Often genuine regenerative clusters are accompanied by axon loss, a disconnect in the appearance of this nerve. (Toluidine-blue stained one-micron thick plastic embedded section)
