Bacteria are easily found in macrophages and Schwann cells of unmyelinated fibers and less frequently in Schwann cells associated with myelinated fibers. Bacteria do not appear extracellularly. The organism favors the Schwann cells of unmyelinated axons and may infect de-differentiated Schwann cells. (electron micrograph)
