Prevertebral ganglia (represented by the SMG) are more complex than paravertebral ganglia (represented by the SCG). Both ganglia have a cholinergic input arising from the intermediolateral column (IML). In addition, prevertebral ganglia are thought to have synaptic input from the vagal nuclei, sensory collaterals from dorsal root ganglia, projections from other sympathetic ganglia and a retrograde projection from intramural myenteric ganglia in the gut.
