26F Series of Images ---- This EMA/NCAM dual immunofluorescence study has been performed on frozen sections in another laboratory (thanks R Bucelli & A Pestronk). In normal nerves, NCAM primarily stains non-myelinating Schwann cells (Remak cells) but, after injury, the majority of Schwann cells in the distal nerve segment become NCAM-positive as they transition into a repair phenotype (see https://neuromuscular.wustl.edu/). The green immunofluorescence represents EMA and the red stain is CD56 in this series of images. 26F1 The EMA IHC pattern varies from fascicle-to-fascicle and appears to stain a subpopulation of fascicular perineurium and the endoneurium in an unusual feathery pattern.
