The patient is a 68-year-old male who has numbness in his lower extremities for eight to nine years and noticed weakness over the past four to five years. There was some concern for monoclonal gammopathy. Operative procedure: Right gastrocnemius and sural nerve biopsies. ---- 17A1,2 There is severe loss of large myelinated axons and only moderate loss of small caliber myelinated axons which are not clearly part of regenerative clusters.
