1A3 Axonal Degeneration (Case 1) Plastic 100X 1 copy.jpg
There are numerous axons with myelin and axonal debris, most within Schwann cells which provide the first degradation of axons and myelin. Fragments of dark myelin debris are found in many Schwann cells (arrowheads). The catabolism of myelin results in small lucent droplets of neutral fat which increase with time after axonal degeneration begins. Macrophages (arrow) have increased lipid droplets but are not present in large number in this site.
