Washington University Experience | PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY | 5 AXONAL REGENERATION | 2A1 Growth cone, rat frustrated regeneration 20,000X copy
2A0 In this experiment rat sciatic nerves were crushed 1+ cm proximally to a ligature applied at the same time. We wanted to see if regenerating axons frustrated by the ligature would mimic neuroaxonal dystrophy, often said to represent frustrated regeneration. Those frustrated axons developed numerous regenerating elements dominated by tubulovesicular elements similar to dystrophic change but did not mimic the entire gamut of morphologic changes in classical neuroaxonal dystrophy. ---- 2A1 Growth related structures/growth cones (from now on “growth cones”, arrow) were present and similar to those in appearance to freely regenerating nerve. Notice the corrugated basement membrane (arrowhead) marking the original axons basement membrane. (electron micrograph) ----
