At autopsy the weight of the unfixed brain is 1280g. The cerebral sulcal-gyral pattern is normal. The brainstem and cerebellar hemispheres are full and equal in size. ---- 13A1,2 Sections from the selected neocortical regions, including frontal, temporal, parietal and occipital (shown) lobes, all show pathology characterized by numerous 5-25 micron vacuoles in neurons and neuropil, consistent with spongiform encephalopathy, and intense reactive astrocytosis that involves all layers of the neocortices. No Alzheimer-type amyloid plaques are identified on H&E or Bielschowsky stained sections. The white matter is unremarkable.
