At autopsy the brain was not weighed for fear of contamination. ---- 15A1-4 The cerebral hemispheres are symmetrical with markedly narrowed gyri (some less than 2 mm) generally. The convolutional and central white matter were intact. The basal ganglia were markedly atrophied. The ventricles were increased in size and shape. Serial sections of the brainstem and cerebellum at 3-4 mm intervals revealed the aqueduct of Sylvius and fourth ventricle to be patent, of normal size, and lined by smooth glistening ependyma . The loci coerulei and substantia nigra are distinct and normally pigmented. The cerebellar nuclei are distinct and lightly pigmented yellowish-orange.
